The Chained Bible
Imprinted in London by Robert
Barker Printer to the King's
Most excellent Majestie
Anno Dom. 1611.
King James I passed a law that every church in England must have a Bible in English, not Latin, so that more people could read it. This Bible is 400 years old and would have been read from in this church during Shakespeare’s lifetime.
The frontispiece of the Bible is missing, and on the cover is a brass plaque which is inscribed:
William Wright and John Noble
Churchwardens for ye Bubough
Stephen Burman and Rich. Gibes
Churchwardens for ye Parish
Anno Dom. 1695.
